TYPES OF SPECIAL STEELS AND ALLOYS

Tool Steel

Tool steel refers to a variety of carbon and alloy steels that are particularly well-suited to be made into tools. Their suitability comes from their distinctive hardness, resistance to abrasion, their ability to hold a cutting edge, and/or their resistance to deformation at elevated temperatures (red-hardness). Tool steels are made to a number of grades for different applications.

The variety of materials ranges from unalloyed, surface-hardening steel to very highly alloyed and depending on application can be divided into:

  • steels for cutting tools;
  • die steels for cold work;
  • die steels for hot work and die casting molds;
  • steels for measuring instruments and high precision parts.

For every field of application, we supply individual steels characterized by the following properties, among other things:

  • great wear resistance;
  • very good toughness;;
  • high pressure resistance.

High Temperature Alloys

In recent years the development of new processes and the drive to improve the economics of existing processes have increased the requirements significantly, so that it is necessary to change from well proven materials to new alloys.The use of high-temperature materials is especially become important for high and ultra-high temperatures applications in modern key industries. One way to define high temperature is on a material’s oxidation behavior: the reason that some metals can be used at higher temperatures despite the process of high temperature corrosion is that they form dense, slow growing oxide scales which cannot be penetrated and which therefore protect the subjacent metal against further attack from gas phase. On the other hand, it can also be defined in terms of changes in the mechanical properties.

High-temperature alloys supplied by us can be used under the following conditions:

  • oxidation and nitration;
  • sulfidation;
  • carburization;
  • combustion gas corrosion;
  • corrosion in glass melts;
  • halogenation.

Corrosion Resistant Alloys

Corrosion resistance is not a material property, i.e., a given property characteristic of the material, like physical or mechanical properties. Instead, corrosion resistance is understood to be the material behavior in a surrounding aqueous or gaseous media. Depending on surrounding media there are the following types of corrosion:

  • atmospheric corrosion;
  • gas corrosion;
  • wet corrosion;
  • ground corrosion;
  • bio corrosion;
  • structural corrosion;
  • crevice corrosion;
  • cavitation corrosion;
  • contact corrosion;
  • fretting corrosion and etc.

Corrosive media such as seawater, acids, alkalis and salt solutions create rough, aggressive environments in which the materials used must have above average resistance and durability.

We supply the corrosion-resistant materials which have proven themselves in such environments for decades. With their specific corrosion and heat-resistant behavior they show no weaknesses, even in wet corrosion service and at high temperatures.
